What's the maximum speed of the Bilis Mo-1?

28mph (45kmh).  The Mo-1 is equivalent to a 50cc petrol moped - just better ;)

Does this mean I need a licence to ride?

No you don't need a full driver's licence to ride!  If you don't have a drivers licence, you can still ride a Mo-1 if you're aged 16 or over, have a provisional drivers licence and complete a Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course (1 day). You'll need to repeat your CBT every 2 years until you get a full licence, which is what a lot of people do.

If you already have a drivers licence, you may not have to do anything extra to ride.  If you passed your driver's test before 1st February 2001, you should have category AM or P written your existing driving licence.  This means you can get straight out and ride!

If you passed your driver's test after 1st February 2001 you only need to complete the CBT course.  You do not need to complete any theory or practical tests.

What does the CBT involve?

We will be covering a bit more about the CBT in our next blog post, but the CBT usually takes a full day and simply shows you how to ride safely on your own, going over some rules and helpful tips for riding safely.  You will practise some simple manoeuvres and get the chance to ride on the road with an instructor.  At the end they will ask you whether you are comfortable to ride on your own - if your answer is yes then you've completed your CBT!

So my 16 year old can ride a Bilis Mo-1 ?

Yes! Imagine the time you'll save by quitting that parent taxi service job...

How far does the Mo-1 really go?

The Bilis Mo-1 can travel up to 80 miles on a single charge of both batteries!  These tests were carried out with a 75kg rider - if you're lighter than this, you might even squeeze a few extra miles out of your moped!

Do I need a special EV charger?

You don't need an expensive EV charger.  The Mo-1 batteries are removable, so you take them into your home / office / the local cafe / your mate's house and charge them from a standard 3-pin's that simple!

How long does it take to charge each battery?

It takes just 4 hours to charge a single battery from 0-100%!

Isn't the electricity to charge and run the moped expensive?

Haha!  This is where the Mo-1 is magic - it's not at all expensive to charge or run. Based on the average London electricity price a the time of writing (14.53 pence per kWh) you can charge both Mo-1 batteries for £0.36.

You can do the calculation yourself to work out what it would be for your electricity tariff:

Size of battery (kWh) x Electricity cost of your supplier (pence per kWh) = Cost to charge a single battery from 0% to 100% (in pence)

Remember the Mo-1 can travel up to 80 miles with both batteries - that works out at a lot less than 1p per mile!

How is it in wet weather?

The Mo-1 is water resistant so you shouldn't have a problem keeping it outside or riding it in the rain.  We love to be out, rain or shine - because there's no such thing as bad weather, just poor choice of clothing ;)

We would advise a waterproof cover for longer-term storage outside, plus it saves a soggy butt if it has been raining.

Is it really zero emissions?

The Bilis Mo-1 really does give off zero emissions as you ride.  None.  Nada!

A fully electric vehicle like the Mo-1 doesn't produce tailpipe emissions (carbon dioxide), or much of the pollution that conventional petrol or diesel vehicles would (there's still a tiny bit from breaking and rubber tyres, but not much more than from a bicycle!).  This means cleaner air in cities, and fewer greenhouses gases that contribute to climate change!

One thing that's often mentioned when talking about switching to an EV is the emissions in the manufacturing process, because battery production is energy intensive.  There have been lots of studies done on this, which show overall it is still significantly better to switch to an EV.  If you want more information, check out this recent paper here which goes into more detail.

Another thing to consider if you're worried about the emissions from your transportation (which we all should be!) the way your electricity is sourced.  If your electricity is coming from a coal or gas power station, it won't be as clean as if it's coming from a renewable source like wind or solar.  You can check how your energy provider supplies your power, and consider switching tariffs or companies to make sure you're going as green as possible!

Where can I park?

Some clever people have designed apps specifically to help you with this one, but on the whole it's a lot easier and cheaper than parking a car!  Parking restrictions will vary slightly from place to place so make sure you get to know your local area.

In car parks - there are usually designated motorbike bays in car parks and they're often free to park for motorcycles and mopeds!

At the roadside - similar rules apply as they would if you were parking a car, but you can fit in smaller spaces!  Plus roadside Pay & Displays sometimes have exemptions for motorcycles/mopeds too so you'll often find free parking.  In residential streets you can see specific motorcycle parking too, again usually free.  Just make sure you check the parking restrictions to make sure!

In bicycle bays - this one's a bit of a grey area and the jury's out.  But technically if you wheel (definitely don't ride, they're usually in pedestrian areas) your moped into the bicycle rack, there is no law against parking there...

On the pavement - another grey area here.  In most places in the UK you're legally allowed to park on the pavement as long as you're not causing an obstruction (whatever that really means?!).  However in London it is illegal to park on the pavement in any situation.  Probably best not to push this one, but good to know if the situation ever arises!

Where can I drive?

This one's easy.  You can drive on any road where the minimum speed limit is 30mph or below (that's most roads in the UK).  You cannot ride your Mo-1 on motorways.  Fortunately there are always alternative routes, and they're usually a lot nicer anyway ;)

You'll also probably find you can drive through cities more easily than you could in a conventional car.  Motorcycles/mopeds tend to be favoured in city centres so you might find you can travel in many places cars can't!  This includes some bus lanes too.

Could someone steal my Mo-1?

Fortunately stealing the Mo-1 is pretty tricky, but of course it's never impossible.  We make it as difficult as we can by including anti-theft immobilising alarms on all our vehicles.  Trust us, they're loud and very off-putting!

You can make it even harder for anyone to lift your Mo-1 by chaining it up when you park.

What other costs do I need to consider?

Like owning any vehicle, there are some extra costs to consider:

Insurance and breakdown cover

Servicing and parts

MOT (for the first 3 years you won't need to worry about this)

Plus you'll need to factor in the cost of a decent helmet at the start.

You won't have to worry about road tax because zero emissions vehicles are exempt!

What paperwork do I need to sort?

We will sort your Mo-1 registration and provide number plates.  All you need to sort for paperwork is your insurance (and CBT if required) and you're good to go!

How long does the battery last?

The Greenway batteries in our Mo-1s are great, and we give you a warranty of 3 years for each one.  You should be able to keep them going for a lot longer than 3 years by looking after them!  Look out for our future blog post on how to best look after your batteries...

What happens if my moped breaks down?

Just as you would with your car, you'll need to get your moped to a garage.  Most garages should be able to take a look, and many will be able to fix them too (electric motors are pretty simple).  The garage should contact us if they have any difficulties.  Remember your Mo-1's Bosch motor is under warranty for the first 3 years too for your peace of mind!

Can I buy spare parts?

We have a range of spare parts available.  Contact us to find out more.

What's the affiliate scheme all about?

When you buy your Mo-1, you will receive your own QR code.  If anyone scans this and buys a Mo-1 for themselves, you'll earn £100!

You can also join our affiliate scheme if you haven't bought your own Mo-1 yet, so you can start earning straight away!  See more details here.

Drivers Licence

If you have a drivers licence that was issued before 2002, you're not required to take the CBT. If you have a licence issued after 2002, you'll be required to take a CBT training day. This can also be done with a provisional licence too, so long as you put L plates on.

CBT 1 Day Training

The CBT training day is a very simple 1 day course that is not a pass or fail - you're simply asked if you feel comfortable riding mopeds now. Answer yes, and you've got your CBT certification and you can ride on.

Motorbike Helmet

Bilis Mopeds are road legal, so like any road legal motorbike, you must wear a motorbike helmet. Make sure you buy a helmet that is BSI approved, and fits safely on your head so that it doesn't jiggle much. Luckily enough, we've partnered with the best in the business. Get your Bell Helmet here.

Moped Insurance

Road legal and registered bikes require insurance. Luckily enough insuring a Bilis Moped costs much less than the eye watering amount you'd spend on car insurance. Check out our insurance partner Lexham to get a quote.
